A life woven through art
Magda Cristi’s art does not spring from theory, but from an invisible thread that runs through her entire life, binding together childhood, geometric space and matter.
Born in 1963 in Tolentino, in the heart of the Marche region, Magda revealed from adolescence a visceral, spontaneous bond with making things by hand. Her first creative workshop was her bedroom, where she delighted in working wood and, above all, in giving shape to fabrics, turning remnants of cloth into dresses for her dolls and, later, for herself. It is in that childhood play, nurtured in a land rich in artisan traditions, that her sensitivity to the texture, colour and structure of materials took root.
This creative instinct led her to study Architecture. Although her secret dream was to become a fashion designer, her academic path gave her a deep understanding of volumes, tensions and proportions in space. For years, rational design took the upper hand, while her passion for matter lay dormant, like fire beneath the ashes.
The turning point came with maturity. Through a series of events, encounters and moments of deep reflection that life holds in store for each of us, Magda felt the need to return to her creative origins. In artistic practice she found not only a refuge, but a total and cathartic form of expression. She was thus reborn as a visual artist, merging into a single synthesis the architect, the would-be fashion designer and the child who created with her hands.
Poetics and textural technique
Today, Magda Cristi’s artistic research is expressed through unique textural works, in which wood and fabric converse in a play of forces and sensitive geometries.
Using wooden boards as a solid structural support, the artist fastens and tensions strips of fabric, shaping them into volutes, curves and three-dimensional forms that rise from the surface. The rigidity of the wood embraces and sustains the softness of the cloth, which under tension becomes a sculptural line.
This technique is not merely a stylistic exercise, but a metaphor of existence. For Magda Cristi, life is a fabric woven of encounters, events, knots and sudden curves. Each strip of cloth stretched across the wood stands for a moment lived, a person met, a difficulty overcome or a joy held close. Her works thus become emotional maps, tactile stories in which viewers may lose themselves and find their own.
“Life is not a straight line, but an intricate weave of intersecting threads. In my works I seek to give body and volume to those crossings, turning lived experience into pure visual matter.”
